Building Long Island's Rowing Tradition

Sagamore Rowing Association & New York Cycle Club "Ride and Row" 8/30/2009

Nine cyclists from New York Cycle Club gathered in Queens and rode a lovely route out to Oyster Bay for a rowing session with Troy. The "Ride and Row" was scheduled for Saturday 8/29, but bad weather cancelled the ride. We arrived (fortunately) after the Tobay Triathlon was over, grabbed lunch in town, and cycled over to the boathouse.

After lunch, Troy gave the cyclists an overview of the rowing stroke, and got the novice rowers on the rowing machines. Then, after a tutorial on how to carry the boat, an eight rigged as an octuple came down, and the rowing lesson continued on the water.

Incredibly, the group was able to row by pairs, by fours, by sixes, and finally all eight rowing together. It was not as familiar as riding in a paceline, but everyone had a great time. The group even tried some starts with the extra time at the end.

After putting away the equipment, and still glowing from the row (and the afternoon summer sun!), the gang rode back home - energized!

Due to the last minute change of date, fewer than half of the cyclists who signed up were able to attend. Lots of people in NYCC hope we'll do it again next year - and maybe make it an annual event!
