Congratulations to past Sagamore member and Hofstra Crew Alumni, PJ
Antonik
The 2006 summer racing series has
come to a positive close for Hofstra Crew Alumni PJ Antonik. Racing at
the National Championship and Canadian Henley Regatta for the New York
Athletic Club he was able to turn some great results. At Nationals he
won the Senior Single but was unfortunately excluded from the race due
to boat weight. He then went on to win the senior quad and took second
in the senior double. In Canada he advanced to the finals in all four
events entered; the Senior and Champ single, the senior quad and the
senior double. After a vigorous second thousand walking through 3 boats
PJ took gold in the senior double with partner Wes Permarini. In the
quad he was able to stroke the boat to a second place finish just
behind University of Victoria. In the singles he was able to turn two
respectable 4th place finishes.
PJ plans to continue racing throughout the fall and has asperations of
securing funding for his 2007 racing season. For more information
please check out an article on his racing at http://www.acorn-online.com/news/publish/article_8661.shtml

For the last event of
the Long Island Championships 2006, ran on Saturday, May 6th off the
Center Island, LI, mixed 8+, scullers of the Crew Club of Oyster Bay
(boys) combined with the Our Lady of Mercy sweepers (girls) and it
worked. Even though their only pre-race practice was a row to the
start, they finished second and third out of nine entries, receiving
silver and bronze medals. Everybody was happy, including their coaches
– on far left is Ellen Hughes of the OLMA, on far right and kneeling in
the middle are Troy Smith and Peter Bisek of the CCOB.

Congratulations are
also in order
to two past Sagamore members -
P.J. Antonik and Amanda Kendrick
for racing at the
National Selection Regatta
on May 19-21.

P.J. Antonik,
originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts joined Hofstra Crew in his
junior year of 2000. After graduation in 2002, he joined NYAC,
where he has been training since. As a NYAC athlete he has won
two national championships, the senior double 2004, and the
Intermediate 8 2005. He won gold in the lightweight 8 in
2004 at the Head of the Charles, Head of the Connecticut and Head of
the Schuylkill. He and his doubles partner, Nick Peterson, placed
11th at this regatta and plan on training through the summer.
With intentions of eventually making the move up to the national team
he plans on training hard for the upcoming summer season of racing.
Amanda Kendrick rowed for Huntington High School and for Yale
University. While at Yale, her boat placed second at the NCAA
Championships in 2004, and won the Eastern Sprints Championships in
2005 for the first time since 1981. After graduating, she rowed
with Sagamore for the rest of 2005, winning the intermediate doubles at
the US Rowing National Championships, and joined the OARS (Olympic
Athletes Rowing at Saugatuck) program at Saugatuck Rowing in
January. She and her partner, Beth Greene, placed 8th at this
regatta. They have been invited to the US Rowing selection camp
for the quad.

SRA
ACTION ALERT |
Date:
Tuesday, April 25, 2006
Time: 7:00pm
Event: Town Board of
Huntington Meeting
Location: Town
Hall, 100 Main street, Huntington, NY
On Tuesday, April 25, 2006 the Town
Board of Huntington will have its regular meeting, including a Public
Hearing, which begins 7pm in the Town Hall at 100 Main street in
Huntington.
At this time it appears prudent for SRA to put in an appearance at this
meeting and to express our views during the Public Hearing, as to SRA's
long term needs, which include restoration of the Coindre Hall
boathouse and expanded facilities to meet the needs of our community.
At one point during the past several years it seemed as though we were
on our way to a beautiful new boathouse on Gold Star Beach, which was
designed with Town funds, but that project was shelved in favor of
restoration/expansion on the Coindre Hall property.
It also appears that regular attendance at Town Hall meetings may be
advisable during future months, so as to demonstrate the continuing
level of our keen and determined interest in restored and additional
facilities.
SRA will be presenting a brief position paper on this subject at this
meeting and urges all SRA members to attend to show our level of
support for these urgently-needed facilities. Student and adult rowers,
parents, coaches, members and friends who are interested in this
subject are urged to attend. Wearing rowing garb and Sagamore
identification would be advisable.
We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Proposed Boathouse
to be built at
Gold Star Battalion Memorial Beach
The
Sagamore Rowing Association is in favor of increasing the opportunities
available to row in the Town of Huntington. In support of this,
the town of Huntington has proposed working with Suffolk County to
restore and expand the Coindre Hall boathouse. We applaud this effort.
However, if due to cost or historic reasons, this expansion cannot
occur, then construction of the proposed boathouse to be built at Gold
Star Battalion Memorial Beach should go forward.
